Ian Robb, CEO of Vita Group

Middleton foam manufacturer Vita Group has partnered with chemical specialist Evonik as part of a pioneering mattress recycling program.

Evonik used its expertise in polyurethane (PU) chemistry to develop an efficient chemical recycling process that converts flexible PU foam into raw polyol raw materials.

According to the latest report of EUROPUR (European Flexible Polyurethane Foam Block Manufacturers Association), in Europe alone, about 40 million mattresses are discarded every year, most of which end up in landfills, generating the equivalent of 600 thousand tons of waste , Including 300 kilotons of polyurethane foam.

Since it is possible to recycle the main component materials used in flexible polyurethane foam and polyurethane foam mattresses, compared with the existing technology, Evonik’s process can significantly increase the level of use of recycled polyols, and it is possible to use flexible polyurethane foam. The industry realizes recycling.

As the next stage of development, Evonik will expand the scale of trials of its new process and further strengthen it through cooperation with the Vita Group, which has already tested the recycled polyol process in multiple flexible foam applications.

Ralph Marquardt, head of Evonik's polyurethane additives business, said: "Only by recycling the products back to their raw materials and reusing them over and over again can we achieve a complete circular economy.

"Our new hydrolysis process can provide recyclates with similar quality and performance to the original raw materials.

“Therefore, innovative foam producers like our partner The Vita Group can achieve their sustainability goals and reduce their environmental impact, while continuing to provide high-quality PU products.”

Ian W. Robb, CEO of The Vita Group, added: “Vita Group is known for our long history of sustainable innovation and investment in circular economy products. As part of our dynamic sustainable development agenda, we recycle and Then bond more than 30,000 tons of scrap.

"Sustainability and innovation are the core principles of all aspects of our business. We regard it as our responsibility to be a pioneer in the development of environmental technology in the industry.

"This very exciting partnership is an important milestone for us to achieve a circular economy, and we look forward to working closely with Evonik."
